Use custom agents deliberately

Make profiles discoverable and select the right specialist for a bounded task.

Store a profile where the host discovers it

The infographic shows repository profiles in .github/agents/. Each profile uses YAML frontmatter and Markdown instructions. Organization-shared discovery has its own setup; placing a file in an arbitrary root agents/ folder does not make it organization-wide.

Select the specialist

Use the custom-agent selection control supported by your client. A focused task might ask a testing specialist to inspect existing tests and propose missing cases without changing production code.

The artwork also shows a comment-based invocation. Treat that wording as an illustration: supported mention syntax, available selectors and session behavior vary between GitHub.com, IDEs, CLI and the app.

Confirm effective capability

Check that the selected profile, tools and repository guidance are active before relying on them. Give only the required tools and review the result. A profile's stated persona does not bypass host permissions or replace approval.

Use the shared profile reference to check fields, discovery rules and environment differences.
