Illustration about humans staying in charge of AI decisions

Chapter 08 / 17

Who is in charge?

AI can offer suggestions, but people decide which goals matter and must take responsibility for important outcomes.

A tool, not a boss

An AI tool may help compare options or find patterns. It cannot decide what is fair or safe for everyone on its own.

Make room for a human

For decisions affecting someone's life, people should be able to question a result, explain their situation, and ask for a review.

Leo makes the final call

Leo's game suggested that he practise one more maths puzzle. He liked the challenge, but his dog needed a walk and the sky looked stormy. The app could suggest an activity, but it did not know everything happening in Leo's day.

Leo saved the puzzle for later and took the dog out with an umbrella. He learned that AI can offer options, while people bring context, values, and responsibility. For important choices, people need a chance to question a result and decide what to do.

A real-life example

A map can suggest the quickest route, but you might choose a safer path with a crossing or a route you know well. The suggestion is useful, and the decision is yours.

Keep a person in charge

  1. Imagine an app suggesting teams for a school game.
  2. Name one useful clue it could use.
  3. Name one important clue it might miss.
  4. Decide how a person could review or change the teams.
