Chapter 05 / 17
Where do we see AI today?
AI can appear in places you already know, from captions on videos to suggestions in a search box.
Everyday helpers
Speech-to-text can turn spoken words into captions. Navigation apps can use predictions to suggest a route when traffic changes.
Look more closely
Not every clever feature is AI, and an AI feature is not always the best option. Ask what information it uses and whether you can correct it.
Maya follows the clues
Maya watched a science video with automatic captions. One line said tiny ants when the speaker had said shiny plants. Maya laughed, then checked the audio and corrected the notes for her project.
Later, a map suggested a different route because a road was busy. Maya noticed that both tools made helpful guesses, but neither was perfect. She learned to look for AI in familiar places and to check it when details matter. Captions are useful, but Maya learned to listen too.
A real-life example
When a video creates captions from speech, speech recognition works out which words may have been spoken. Names, accents, and noisy rooms can make those captions harder to get right.
Spot a suggestion
- Notice one suggestion from an app, game, or map.
- Guess what information it might use.
- Ask what could make the suggestion wrong.
- Decide whether you would check it before acting.
